In 1st grade, we work hard to build a strong foundation in Reading and Writing. More Reading skills are learned in 1st grade than in any other elementary grade. Common Core Standards ensure that our curriculum is challenging in all subject areas.
In Mathematics, students learn the basics; as well as, problem solving skills. A variety of Research-based resources, including Everyday Math, are used to teach Mathematics in 1st grade. The Wonders literacy program is used to help students meet expectations in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Fluency.
Daily Journal Writing encourages students to use their imagination; as well as, day to day experiences to develop writing traits that will continue into the upper grades of their schooling. 1st grade students are assigned enriching projects throughout the year that are completed at home, and then shared with their classmates.
We begin each day with Pledges to the American flag, Christian flag, and the Bible. This is followed by Group Calendar activities, a Bible lesson, and Morning Prayer. This is a time for reviewing concepts, memorizing scripture, sharing with one another, and developing each child’s unique God-given talents.
